This is the first in a series about the Apple 1. It is not only a piece of history, but a project that people still try to recreate today. I dug into what led Steve Wozniak to build it in the first place, and then I went through the practical side of building a replica without turning it into a mystery project. The main question was simple enough: why this machine mattered so much, and what it actually took to build one now.
I traced the Apple 1 back through the hobbyist and early personal computing scene that came before it. Wozniak had already been building electronics from a young age, designing computers on paper, and working with terminals before the Apple 1 existed. A big piece of the story was the shift from large and expensive systems toward something a person could actually own, along with the arrival of the 6502 and the influence of the Homebrew Computer Club.

I also covered what made the Apple 1 different from earlier kit machines. It wasn’t the first desktop computer, but it fit the idea of a personal computer much better by pairing a keyboard with accessible video output at a lower cost than many earlier systems. Wozniak combined ideas from a terminal he had already designed with the 6502, DRAM, and ROM chips containing his monitor program, and that became the Apple 1.

From there I went through the early Apple story just far enough to explain why original Apple 1 boards are so valuable now. Steve Jobs pushed the idea of selling assembled boards, Paul Terrell agreed to buy working units for the Byte Shop, and the boards were assembled and tested in Jobs’ parents’ garage. Around 200 were made, most were sold within months, and then attention shifted to the Apple II.

On the build side, I made it clear that this isn’t a beginner project. An Apple 1 replica needs more than basic soldering skills, and it helps if you already know your way around power supplies, logic circuits, timing issues, and troubleshooting. I also put the cost in a realistic range of roughly $500 to $1000 depending on parts, tools, and how authentic you want the build to be.
Research came first. I pointed to the Applefritter forum, the original Apple 1 manual, and Mike Willegal’s build guide as the most useful places to start. The original manual included schematics and operating details, and I also mentioned Steve Wozniak’s comments on right to repair since the Apple 1 documentation reflected that older approach of actually giving users the technical details.
I went over the different replica options too. Some boards are circuit-exact clones, while others use newer parts to reduce the chip count. I planned to build a more authentic version, and I mentioned the two better-known replica boards: the Mimeo by Mike Willegal and the Newton by Mike Newton. I also noted that cheaper no-name boards exist, but they may need more checking before use.
Parts sourcing was where things got more specific. I had already picked up an Apple 1 replica motherboard on eBay, originally just as a display piece, but I decided to source the components and build it out. The harder chips to find were the Signetics parts, especially the character generator, PROMs, and shift registers. I found common TTL chips locally, used Unicorn Electronics for some of the rarer ICs, and stressed sticking with the original-style 74xx TTL parts rather than LS or HC substitutions. I also covered the need for a composite monitor, an ASCII keyboard or modified Apple II keyboard, and an Apple Cassette Interface if you want to do more than look at a blinking cursor.
I wrapped up with the practical advice that mattered most: test as you go, check traces before soldering sockets, look for shorts, and verify voltages before installing rare chips. The next step was building the replica, testing it, and getting software loaded onto it.
